Have you ever thought about turning something you love into a side gig this year?

In today’s economic landscape, having a side hustle isn’t just about making extra income—it’s about creating freedom, fulfillment, and flexibility in your life.

With the rise of the gig economy, freelancing platforms, and social media, turning a passion into a profitable venture has never been more accessible.

But if it’s so easy, why do so many people struggle to get started?

That’s exactly the question Roslyn emailed me last week.

Roslyn’s Question: “How Do I Start a Side Hustle When I Have No Experience?”

Roslyn wrote:

“I’ve always loved photography, and people say I have a great eye, but I don’t know where to begin. I don’t have a business background, and I’m afraid of putting myself out there. How do I start a side hustle when I have no experience?”

This is such a common concern.

Maybe you have a hobby or skill you’ve dreamed of monetizing, but fear, time constraints, or uncertainty keep holding you back.

The good news? You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect.

You can start today—even if it’s just on the side.

Why a Side Hustle Can Be Life-Changing

A side hustle isn’t just about extra money—it’s about:

✔️ Creating financial freedom with multiple income streams.

✔️ Pursuing something fulfilling outside of a traditional job.

✔️ Building confidence by stepping outside your comfort zone.

✔️ Gaining career flexibility if you ever want to leave your 9-to-5.

With so many online tools and freelancing opportunities, it’s never been easier to build a business around something you love.

So, what’s stopping most people?

The Common Challenges That Hold People Back

Even with all these benefits, many hesitate to start a side hustle because of:

1️⃣ Fear of Failure

  • “What if I’m not good enough?”

  • “What if nobody wants what I’m offering?”

These fears can paralyze you before you even begin.

2️⃣ Lack of Time

  • Many people juggle jobs, family, and responsibilities and feel they don’t have time for a side hustle.

  • Others don’t know where to start even if they do have time.

3️⃣ Fear of Uncertainty

  • “What if I put time into this and it doesn’t take off?”

  • “How will I know if my idea will make money?”

These unknowns make people stick to the comfort of their 9-to-5, even when they crave something more.

But here’s the truth: Taking the first step is always the hardest—but also the most rewarding.

How to Turn Your Passion Into a Side Hustle (Step by Step)

Step 1: Identify Your Passion

Ask yourself:

✔️ What do I enjoy doing in my free time?

✔️ What skills do I already have that others might need?

✔️ What problems can I solve for people?

Your passion doesn’t have to be “creative.” It could be:

  • Teaching or coaching (e.g., tutoring, fitness training, career coaching).

  • Tech skills (e.g., graphic design, video editing, coding).

  • Handmade crafts or digital products (e.g., Etsy, Canva templates).

  • Organization or home decor (e.g., closet organizing, interior styling).

Even small skills—like resume writing or social media management—can be turned into profitable services.

Step 2: Evaluate Market Demand

Once you know what you love to do, it’s time to see if people are willing to pay for it.

✔️ Who is your target audience? (Who would benefit from what you offer?)

✔️ What are their biggest pain points? (What problem can you solve?)

✔️ Are people already selling similar services/products? (Competition is a good sign—there’s demand!)

Where to research market demand:

  • Google Trends (to see search interest).

  • Reddit, Facebook Groups, Quora (to find real questions people ask).

  • Etsy, Fiverr, Upwork (to see what’s already selling).

If people are already paying for something similar, your idea has potential.

Step 3: Develop a Simple Business Plan

You don’t need a complicated 20-page business plan—just a clear idea of:

✔️ Your Offer – What are you selling? (A service, product, or expertise?)

✔️ Your Pricing – How much will you charge? (Look at competitors for guidance.)

✔️ Your Marketing Strategy – How will you reach your first customers? (Social media, freelancing platforms, word of mouth?)

Step 4: Start Small & Take Action

You don’t need to quit your job or invest a ton of money upfront.

Instead, test things out on the side:

✅ Offer free or discounted services to gain experience.

✅ Use social media to showcase your work.

✅ List your services on freelance platforms like Fiverr or Upwork.

✅ Sell products on Etsy, Shopify, or Instagram.

The key is to start small, gain momentum, and adjust as you grow.

Step 5: Overcome Fear & Build Confidence

Many people hesitate because of self-doubt.

How to push past fear:

  • Worried about judgment? People who criticize usually aren’t the ones taking risks.

  • Fear of failure? Every successful entrepreneur has failed before succeeding.

  • Scared to invest time? Think about how much time is wasted NOT pursuing your goals.

Success comes from learning, adapting, and improving—not from waiting for the perfect moment.

Roslyn’s Journey: Taking Her First Steps

After I answered Roslyn’s email, she decided to take small steps toward her side hustle.

  • She offered her first free photo session to gain experience.

  • She started sharing her work online to build her portfolio.

  • She’s actively building her client list and planning her transition from her current job.

She’s not there yet—but she’s started.

And in a few months, we’ll check back in on Roslyn’s journey to see how things are going!

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Start Today

Turning your passion into a side hustle isn’t just about money—it’s about:

✔️ Creating financial freedom and new opportunities.

✔️ Building a life that aligns with your passions.

✔️ Developing confidence by taking action.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to start, this is it.

My side hustle doesn’t bring in a lot of money but I officiate weddings and Handfastings along with baptisms/baby makings. I plan on branching out when I retire from my main job in 10 years to become come a birth, postpartum, and death doula which I am training right now to do, but I’m not taking any practicals or clients right now since my current job doesn’t allow me the flexibility to do this type of on call training. But I will have the knowledge to do it. I can do the bereavement portion if I am available like the weddings and baptisms.

Jackie, this is absolutely beautiful! The care and meaning you put into each ceremony truly shines through. It’s incredible that you’re able to help couples create such personal and heartfelt moments, especially for those who might not have access to traditional officiants. The story about the veteran deeply touched me, what a powerful way to honor his love and legacy. My grandfather was a veteran.

I love that you’ve found such a meaningful way to give back to the community. You mentioned not expecting to get rich from it, but with how much heart and effort you put into each ceremony, I can absolutely see this expanding into something even bigger if that’s ever something you wanted!
